The Aardvarks from Muskegon, Michigan named themselves by looking in the dictionary for the first word that caught their eye. They released the scrubbed guitar goodness meets chiming bells ringing that is I'm Higher Than I'm Down on their own label called Vark in May of 1966. It can also be found on Michigan Mayhem Vol. 1 and Pebbles Vol. 11.

Here,http://www.grandrapidsrocks.com/bands/aardvarks.php is a very interesting web page where you can learn about the band history in detail .

Great track! Is that squeaky-bass-drum-pedal i can hear a couple of beats in or is it the drummers' "momentum" being briefly picked up? Not that i care, it's a real winner. Thanks.

One of the coolest guys was David Quail, he wrote a lot of songs in Muskegon he was 12 or 13, no credit ,he just wrote them and gave them to these bands. This guy was a friend of dirty jack, and chet heistand now dead. David Quail is still allve and he runs several businesses. From what I hear still pretty wild but maybe some are born with talent.

They were out at the same time as The Union Made Band with Mike Pearo, Stein Crancer, John Pykonen and Don Mikkelson out of Whitehall along with other local groups named The Cynics with Joey Milder, Poor Boys Pride with Lowell Webster, 9th Steet Market, The Sunset with Jim McCormick. All very good garage bands.

I'm not sure who the guys in this picture are, but I know they're not the guys who recorded this song. My dad was the original drummer for the Aardvarks who recorded this album. I do know that a number of the guys were drafter and the band really took a turn for the worst. As seen by the post by markthelark. I sent the link to my Dad to see if he knows who these guys are.

I grew up near these lads....When I was 14 and got a Vox combo organ for Christmas they came calling to ask to rent it as theirs was crapped out and they had a gig at the Club Safari in Muskegon... My dad advised against but being 14 I lobbied and let them...When I got it back, it looked like an ashtray, full of ciggie burns. Still, it was worth it to have hooked them up.
