A little bitty tear (Burl Ives, written by Hank Cochran)
A little bitty tear let me down, spoiled my act as a clown
I had it made up not to make a frown, but a little bitty tear let me down.
You said you were leaving tomorrow
That today was our last day
I said there'd be no sorrow, that I'd laugh when you walked away.
But A little bitty tear let me down, spoiled my act as a clown
I had it made up not to make a frown, but a little bitty tear let me down.
I said I'd laugh when you left me
Pull a funny as you went out the door
That I'd have another one waiting
And I'd wave goodbye as you go.
But A little bitty tear let me down, spoiled my act as a clown
I had it made up not to make a frown, but a little bitty tear let me down.
Everything went like a planned it
And really put on quite a show
In my heart I felt I could stand it
Till you walked with your *grip* through the door.
Then A little bitty tear let me down, spoiled my act as a clown
I had it made up not to make a frown, oh -but a little bitty tear let me down.
A little bitty tear let me down.
Wikepedia says:
"A Little Bitty Tear" is a song written by the American country music singer-songwriter Hank Cochran. It has been recorded by many musical acts, including Cochran and Burl Ives.
In a 1965 interview with Billboard magazine, Cochran stated that he wrote many songs, including "A Little Bitty Tear", in his car while commuting home from work. He stated that "Nothing prompted the idea for" the song, that it "just came into my mind."[1]
Ives recorded the song for his album, The Versatile Burl Ives!, in 1961. This version was released as a single late in the year, and it became one of Ives' highest-charting hits early the next year. It made the top ten on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in February 1962, peaking at #9.[2] The song nearly topped the Billboard country music chart, spending two weeks in the runner-up slot, and it spent one week atop the Billboard Easy Listening chart.[1] In England, the song spent two weeks at #9 on the UK Singles Chart in early 1962.[3] Ives also earned Grammy nominations for the song in the categories Best Country & Western Recording and Best Male Solo Vocal Performance.[1]
Rockabilly singer Wanda Jackson issued her version of "A Little Bitty Tear" at virtually the same time as Ives' record was released, and this reached #84 on the Hot 100. Other artists who recorded versions of the song in 1962 include Chet Atkins (on his album Our Man in Nashville) and British country duo Miki & Griff, who charted at #16 in the UK with their recording.[4] Songwriter Cochran recorded his own version of the song in 1980, which made #57 on the Billboard country music chart.[1].
