One of the best known English and Scottish ballads collected by Francis James Child. This one is a very dramatic story of love and murder, with the stock ending of the shared grave - in this case a threesome. The verses where Ellen insults the brown girl and thus gives more motivation for the killing may be an American addition. Jean Ritchie wrote about this as a popular song in the Appalachians.
I have uploaded a video of this song before, but I sang it recently at a session of the Hong Kong Folk Society at The Canny Man in Wanchai so thought I would put up this live version.
This song is also on my first CD: "AXIS OF EVIL and other True Stories."
