It's funny, but I didn't really know that she was Japanese American until a few minutes ago, but now I can here the accent plainly in her voice. Too bad she wasn't given more time in the spotlight. Simple, yet nice natural voice.

MUSIC TIME MACHINE 1978: "If I can't have you. I don't want nobody baby..."Hawaii's YVONNE ELLIMAN became the first Asian American SOLO artist to reach #1 on the Billboard HOT 100. Her monster hit "If I Can't Have You" became one of the legendary songs of the disco era. Credit goes to RSO chairman and Bee Gees manager Robert Stigwood who was executive producer of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack. He ordered the Bee Gees to sing "How Deep Is Your Love" and gave "If I Can't Have You" to Yvonne Elliman. The Bee Gees already had recorded their version of "If I Can't Have You".Good move. "If I Can't Have You" followed the three previous released singles off the Saturday Night Fever ("How Deep Is Your Love", "Stayin' Alive" and "Night Fever") to the top spot on the pop chart. In fact "If I Can't Have You" ended "Night Fever"'s eight week run at #1. Even more impressive, Barry Gibb co-wrote the four consecutive number one hits. Album: Saturday Night Fever soundtrack and Night FlightWriters: Barry, Robin and Maurice Gibb Note: In 1976, Margot Chapman became the first Asian Pacific Islander American to hit #1 with her group Starland Vocal Band with "Afternoon Delight". But Yvonne Elliman was the first solo Asian American artist to hit #1.
