XTC performing "Yacht Dance" on the Old Grey Whistle Test in January 1982. This was recorded less than two months before Andy Partridge's nervous breakdown, and this is in fact the only time the band ever played this song live.

To me, this is absolutely the best song XTC ever made. It's so immersive and perfect; the empty instrumentation, the mournful singing. It just hits me like few songs do, and diminishes none over many repeted listenings. The only other song I can think of that had such a profound effect on me is Days by the Kinks. It's hard for me to put this into words, which is unusual, but it's almost like the song is more powerful than the sum of what went into it. I can't express how hard this song but me; not necessarily the lyrics, which I think are great, but the way it all goes together. It is almost like a punch in the gut! I get excited by even the thought of the song. Sorry for the nonsensical rambling: I'm trying to put into words a visceral, immediate, powerful feeling that happens outside conscious thought.

One of the most underrated bands ever. Thanks, XTC, and thanks Andy.

XTC remains so very underrated - and YouTube sheds light on that fact via this early track where Andy Partridge displays all kinds of talent. Love me some acoustic guitar in the hands of a spirited musician, and this may be the only time Yacht Dance was ever played live!

A late 70s west country folk band. The like of which the British mainstream had the immense privilege of seeing once and once only. And, all of a sudden, the cupboard's bare....

awesome, awesome! A live Mummer CD may have been a just the nail that was needed to overcome the loss of live performances. Peter Kroll, Singapore

Wonderful. XTC, in my opinion, is one of the most underrated bands. I must also put in a plug for Extreme. XTC deserved better. Thanks, Andy, for the music and dedication.
