Wow, sounds like the original. I was fortunate enough to put myself at about a dozen Beefheart concerts through the 70's and one XTC concert in 1981--all in NYC. I had no idea it was all over just about then for both touring wise. So lucky.

@yohppoy Like the others are saying, this is a great cover. It's clearly not Don Van Vliet aka Captain Beefheart singing nor is Jeff 'Antennae Jimmy Semens' Cotton doing his flesh horn parts on this take. Another giveaway should be the production, which is obviously much better here than on the famous 1969 album. Trout Mask Replica was recorded on the cheap which makes the challenging music even more difficult on the ears.

Quite interesting reading some of the comments. This is the best cover of this track that I've heard - Also check out "Hot head" by That Petrol Emotion off the same "Fast N' Bulbous" album....Another outstanding rendition, but with a different angle to the original Magic Band version. Incidentally, this Ella Guru is 100% XTC - There is no Zappa or Beefheart on it.........trust me.

I know it's hard to believe, but Andy Partridge painstakingly picked this track apart piece-by-piece, right down to each instrument, sound and effect. All true, all AP. Don't underestimate either his talent or his incredible attention to detail :-) He was inspired by Dave Gregory, XTC's guitarist, who also picked apart famous tracks and covered them on the Remoulds album. They are also so good they are sometimes indistinguishable from the originals.

i have to post the original version to hear the difference...for me this is pure beefheart, i don't believe partridge made exactly the same voice of zappa on the phone, but who knows...

Hey man, straight from the horse's mouth: Andy Partridge: A big step for me was doing that Beefheart tribute thing [Fast & Bulbous: A Tribute to Captain Beefheart], which you see people arguing about online. Some of them think that it's actually Beefheart doing it. Which is great! From an XTC MySpace interview.

you can also hear frank zappa backing sayng "...this is fast'n'bulbous"... ...and this is also the title of the tribute compilation "Fast 'n' Bulbous - A Tribute to Captain Beefheart" (1988) where the XTC cover of "ella guru" orignally is... listen to that version and compare them guys... peace
