"Better" without Barry Andrews? Couldn't sing? All subjective, of course, but I can't fully agree. I saw XTC live--with and without him--several times and they were great in both lineups, mind you. But they didn't have the musical diversity without a keyboard and with a second guitar. And having a more "working-class" voice--not uncommon at the time--made them grittier...which I consider a GOOD thing.What happened post-Barry was that Colin and Andy had developed more as songwriters, so I can see how that would make them "better" to many. But as much as I like Drums And Wires, I'd still rank Go+ (with the bonus dub record) above it. The latter just had a harder edge, less poppy. 13 years ago
