One of XTC's greatest Albums..

Have to agree with BlueRidgeParkway here, though I always thought the Rundgren and Partridge sounds weren't very far apart in the first instance-- nor where their wry senses of humour. Actually I was very surprised to read (in the XTC bio book) that these two did not get along. It was probably an ego thing. But the sound of this LP is just marvellous and as an artist no-one should resist this kind of collaboration at least once in a career.

I've been praying all the week throughAt home, at work and on the busI've been praying I can keep youAnd to earn enough for usI can take humiliationAnd hurtful comments from the bossI'm just praying by the weekendI can earn enough for usFound a house that won't repair itselfWith it's windows crackingAnd a roof held together with holesJust because we're at the bottom of the ladderWe shouldn't be sadderThan others like usWho have goals for the betterment of lifeGlad that you want to be my wife, but honestI've been praying all the week throughAt home at work and on the busI've been praying I can keep youAnd to earn enough for usSo you're saying that we're going to be threeNow, a father's what I'll beDon't get me wrong, I'm so proudBut the belt's already tightI'll get another job at night, but honestI can take humiliationAnd hurtful comments from the bossI'm just praying by the weekendI can earn enough for usJust because we're at the bottom of the ladderWe shouldn't be sadderThan others like usWho have goals for the betterment of lifeGlad that you want to be my wife, but honestI can take humiliationAnd hurtful comments from the BossI'm just praying by the weekendI can earn enough for usI can earn enough for us

LOVE XTC and LOVE TODD, but I'm familiar enough with Todd's work to say that this great XTC song is kinda of like "Andy Partridge sings on a UTOPIA song"--Todd's touch is unmistakable, and that's probably why Andy was so pissed when he heard the first mix of this. I'm sure the last thing he wanted to do was a sing-along to a Todd Rundgren record! But, there's enough genuine XTC in Skylarking to make it one of XTC's finest records. Forget the remasters, get the MFSL Original Master Recording of Skylarking (+ Oranges & Lemons). Those out-of-print CDs sound fantastic--they were mastered from the original tapes of course, recorded at HALF-SPEED (not 45rpm) and burned onto 24k gold-plated CDs for maximum longevity. If you can find the vinyl versions of these on MFSL, those were pressed into virgin vinyl and have almost NO clicks & pops like normal records. Too bad they didn't get to press "English Settlement" on MFSL--I think that stands as the best XTC album ever!

No worries. Understandable, to me anyway. If you stumble onto some articles 'bout XTC, your gonna plow through a ton of material and bullet groupings of interesting stories. The infidelity reference goes to the song after this one, 'Don't Need Another Satellite'.

Love this song. "Remastered from the original analogue tapes at 45rpm" makes no sense whatsoever. Vinyl records (singles) spin @ 45RPM. Analog recording tape typically runs 15 or 30 IPS :)

This album came out when I spent the summer swinging a hammer and crawling under houses. I'd listen to it while working. I must have been nineteen. Man! Those were good times.

@talkingdoc :)... he's written some great songs, some presumably inspired by his muse(s) along the way, but sometimes a song is just a song, right?x

@InParticularNobody OK, OK everyone I am sorry I ever said it! I read it somewhere, I don't even remember anymore. It is a great song and I love XTC as well. Didn't mean to ruffle any feathers! It is a lovely romantic little diddy and I will never post a remark without backing it up again. Promise! :)

@SleepyTymeT Yeh this part about the roof tore a little hole in my heart; a new roof was put on for lots of money AND it still leaked. YEH!! DID not use flashing like I wrote down; AND he got paid before that first rain AND left town. Had wonderful pics of jobs; NOT thinking that they were just that; PICS.;-)) I LOVE THE TUNE and came back here to have a re-play or two. I think the message is as I imagine; a loving romance; :-))) YEH! Just magnificent little melody and lyrics.;-)) <3<3<3

@talkingdoc Humm did you have to burst my bubble; HUH??? ;-)) I still take it as a sweet wonderful XTC magnificent vid. with things as a lady hold dear coming to me on this Valentine's Day of musical Gems that my Angel Being shared. It is a most delicious tune musically + lyrics I like just the way I TAKE them to mean. I can do that being a fickle-female can't I??? WELL this Band should be known as well as other bands that made their way to the USA . XTC is one of MY TOP 5 Fave's. 5*'s +++++

Andy Partridge is the man! Very underrated, but on par with the great songwriters of any generation.

...as well, my favorite XTC ever! What a band, no matter which quality member may or may not have resumed the job. This band is hard to match! Wahi'

This song is up there among my favourites. Got to say though - and this is not anti-XTC - that the whole issue of remastering is a joke. This sounds virtually identical to the original vinyl I first bought in 1986. In fact, I would say that any attempt to improve perfection is doomed to failure.

This entire album is absolutely amazing. It's a shame that Partridge and Rundgren didn't get along better because the production on this album is incredible.
