I have been looking for this song for years and finally found it here on youtube. The last time I heard it was when I was in Viet Nam in 1965. Great post.

When I recorded this US import on reel tape, thirty odd years ago, knowing school French,I labelled it Cher Marie, thinking that must be close to Arcadian French.....what about that fabulous Turnaround....was it the Buckaroos?

Really, this is "Chere Marie". That's how we Cajuns say it. It's not "sha" as some Anglophones think, but it's "chere". For instatce,, we sing a song like "Eh, Chere Marie. C'est toi que J'aime autant." (ay sher marie, say twa keu jam o-ton) Translate: "Hey, Dear Marie. It's you that I love so." The French word "Chere" means "Dear".
