Just to let you guys know--apparently this is from the album 8.21 A Blue Bunny Compilation. You can find it for sale online, I think (have not purchased it). Also Sufjan wrote the song Far Physician's Son for it, which is streamable from Grooveshark, along with Woman at the Well.

no one has commented on this song in 5 years. i felt i should update this and let sufjan know that this song is still one of the most beautiful ever written. and whomever it is for, is still madly, incredibly, undeniably in love with him.he has her hand.

In the Bible, in Matthew chapter 4, Jesus meets a woman at a famous well. She did not have a socially acceptable lifestyle, yet Jesus showed her compassion (therefore, "He was her friend..." in the song). Also, Jesus talks about a fountain of living water, which is symbolic for eternal life. The woman thinks He meant that she would become a actual springing fountain (hence, "She was a fountain then..." in the song). I hope this helps!

this song I really love the melody and I love all their songs ... only someone could explain me the lyrics of this song talking about? is that I would like to make a dedication of that song but the lyrics do not understand enough achievement and I would like someone to explain to me .... Thanks I love this song: D

I agree, Sufjan's music stirs up something in the depths of my soul The subtle harmonies create perfect moods to reminisce. His songs echo an aching familiarity, yet I can never place it. The music carries emotion, but inspires it even more. That could just be me though.

Can anybody tell me what kind of flute or pipe he's playing in this song and the beginning?

illinois is my favorite album by him but i didn't really like michigan and avalanche was alright i guess. my second favorite from him aside from illinois is age of adz though. that's kind of strange since they're 2 completely different styles

Since I started listening to him over a year ago I literally can not get enough of it. I listen to him all day every day at work, and somehow love it more every day! What's going on!!

Wow every song Sufjan made from the Michigan-era thru Illinois/Avalanche project are amazing. Not a huge fan of the Age of Adz or the All Delighted People EP but damn even his B-Sides from the Seven Swans-period are incredible. Seriously from 2003-2006 this guy did not write one bad song.

i love how his songs have little things in them that tie them to some of his other songs... like around 1:27 in this one, it reminds me of "we watched it all night, we grew up in spite of it" from romulus. :)
