+fence headstone Actually, "some spirit force" did write his music. Varg has NEVER considered his music to be black metal. His music was inspired by D&D, a "game for nerds". I guess you must be a nerd to for liking D&D inspired music. Also, he uses clean vocals on a LOT of his newer stuff, and never had anti-christian imagery or a political agenda in his lyrics to begin with, even stating that Burzum is not the place to promote his own beliefs. WITTR is basically Burzum with influences from Neurosis as well. You don't believe me? Check out his blog +ThuleanPerspective He'll tell you that he grew up playing dungeons and dragons and listening to Tchaikovsky; he was never a metalhead.

this band can be whatever you want to call them!, i just simply think they are an amazing band that wants to be unique, nothing wrong with that is there?,I do listen to alot of black metal myself and I think these guys are just setting themselves apart from the trend.

I really enjoyed this. The interviewer seemed really nervous but you could tell that was because he'd really thought about the questions, which were good.

I've been listening to a lot of WITTR the past while. Never knew much about the band members and I thought it best not to watch any of their interviews because I knew I'd hate them but oh no. I had to click on this anyway so now I won't be able to take their music seriously anymore. It's fine that he doesn't think they're a black metal band, but it's his snobby dismissal of black metal that probably pisses people off.

Everything about them is most certainly NOT black metal, and this man is neither obnoxious nor pretentious for pointing out that his band is not a black metal band (you can argue whether he's pretentious or obnoxious for other reasons, but that's definitely not one of them). Based on this interview, I don't believe he is trying to set WitTR apart from black metal as a way to highlight the originality of the band, but out of respect for what black metal represents and an understanding that his ideology as expressed in the music differs significantly from that traditional aesthetic or spirit or whatever you want to call it.Satanism in its various forms, darkness, death, misanthropy, and "the void" (as he puts it) are as much a part of black metal as tremolo-picked guitars and blast beats. And Aaron Weaver is smart enough to know it. He doesn't call his band "black metal" and he doesn't disparage traditional, Satanic black metal. You can't ask much more of a musician who appropriates BM sonic elements to make non-BM music.

And even if it's not that doesn't matter. If you like it you like it it doesn't matter if it's "kvlt" or "true black metal." The fact that you guys only listen to shit that's deemed "okay" for a true black metal fan to listen to seriously fucks up the entire reasoning behind black metal. Be original be independent don't be an idiot.

Who gives a shit you either like the music or you don't, all this "fucking hipster", "it's not truly kvlt", and "they're not real black metal" BS is pissing me off. Everything about them is fucking black metal.

There is widespread misunderstanding about satanism and its relationship to black metal. Satanism in black metal has nothing to do with devil worshipping or sacrificing small animals. Satan represents individuality, left hand path ideology, and rebelling against collectivism and religion in general. The satanic themes in Scandinavian BM run more in line with Nordic paganism, and the philosophies of Nietzsche, rather than the asshat "satanism" and "evilness" you hear from idiots like Glen Benton.

Good interview... I used to see them quite frequently when they were starting out and came up to Seattle for gigs. Cool guys, totally no-bullshit then. Haven't really followed them after the first album. I have the first couple of demo CDs if anyone is interested.

It's good to finally see a smart person in this "black metal" scene. It seems that it's overcrowded with idiots trying to be evil or cool.

There's a world of difference between the two buddy - but bear in mind quantity breeds mediocricy. That WITTR were mentioned in some news article =/= mainstream. That's why you support the bands who do have a good message or belief and don't support/ignore the posers or just those you don't agree with. It's simple really.

Tryfing94

That's one of them. The other is/was a colloquial term for a bundle of sticks/kindling, if I'm not much mistaken. Now it's pretty much thrown left and right.
