They rolled into a fascinating groove in the late 1980s. They definitely developed from Pink Flag and 154. The spacey, resonant, celestial ambience that overlaid their sharp, roughly textured guitars was something they had already been doing. The added some layers but they also deepened and added some fascinating rythmn and lead guitar textures. Wonderful effects: underwater, buzzsaw, vortex, industrial belches, grunts, hammers, multilayered screeches and feedback. Absolutely marvelous!

I was really preplexed when this Album came out, liking it and hating it because it didn't sound like 1st round Wire, now hearing it, it sounds great, Wire really amazed me and had me scratching my head with their 80's version sometimes I thought they sucked with their 80's self reinvention, other times I thought they were so far ahead, even I couldn't catch up with them..

@hatfulofelt This isn't actually, the single mix. At least its not the mix on my CD single. The mix in this video has a radically different opening, sligtly different drum sound, and a section reduced just to drums, which the single mix doesn't.

Great vocal audio. let's the lycis work on your soul. They (wire) are pretty awesome. Not one of my favorite songs, i always include it. It's kind of like the glial cells in the brain, supports the grey matter. Every one of these 4 are genuises. i'd place serious money on it. \ "a bell is a cup" is their most erudite + abstruse album.

Why does this version sound so good? I have the mp3's, from both "The A-List" album, and also "A Bell Is A Cup Until It Is Struck" album... ...however, neither mp3's 'mix' sounds as good as this youtube/video version...I only wish I had a *high quality (stereo, etc.)* version of this...
