Probably the greatest singer/songwriter duo to come out of Scotland. I saw them at a Folk Festival in Aberfeldy early 70's where they stole the show. I bought "Willie and the lapdog" on vinyl as soon as it came out. I have over the years transferred it to tape and then disc to enjoy it in the car. The track "Among the Birks" was reputedly written at that time after visiting the "Birks o' Aberfeldy", a wonderful place that also inspired Rabbie Burns.

Glad I found this. I remember fondly the many concerts at the Apollo in Glasgow in the 70s. I had actually forgotten how great these guys were. A real talent.

Perfection.  To my ears one of the most beautiful songs of that era.  The music, the vocals, the total package is just wonderful.  "Willie" has been a good friend to me over the years.  Thank you, Gallagher and Lyle.

Glad someone finally posted this gem.  Reminds me of solemn foggy days in the north of England surrounded by the shipyards.

@goldheartbadge - don't forget Benny's ocarina (on Happy Birthday Ruthie Baby) ;-)

@Krzyszczynski - they've exchanged roles/instruments many times in their career. They both play guitar, mandolin, harmonica and bass; Benny also plays keyboards and accordion, and Graham banjo.

G & L playing together again?!! Oh man ..... I'd have made the pilgrimage if I'd still been in the UK, but it's a canny step from NZ to Scotland. Funny, they also opened with this when I saw them at the Queen Elizabeth Hall, London in '75. But it was Graham on the mandolin and harmonica then, (though still singing lead).

G & L recently re-formed for 2 charity gigs at the Vikingar in Largs. I travelled all the way from Liverpool to see the first gig - and I was not disappointed. This was their opening number; Graham took lead vocal and played acoustic guitar, while Benny sang harmony and played mandolin with a harmonica on a holder.

@GordonBlue Was at that concert too - remember the saxophonist (Jimmy Jewel?) came on up at the raised part of the stage. Remember we missed the last bus to Pollokshaws and had to walk home...worth it though!

In my opinion Willie & the Lapdog is their best album, but I cannot find it in cd. I have the lp, though. Same thing for Happy Birthday Ruthy Baby by McGuiness Flint, and Moonbathing by Lesley Duncan. Shame.

Couldnt let this one pass without a comment, what a fantastic song, so relevant to the folk scene that exists to this day in West Central Scotland
