An unusually passionate piece from this unfairly neglected composer. Played by Mats Widlund (piano).

Sad to say, Stenhammar is definitely neglected outside his native country. Suffice it to say that I've loved classical music all my life but have only recently 'discovered' him. Many thanks to all those who've enabled me to do so by uploading him to YouTube!

To all of you that write that he is unfairly neglected, I would like to say that he is a highly respected composer in Sweden and never forgotten. He has his own room in Gothenburg concert hall, which is called Stenhammar-salen. He was the chief conductor in Gothenburg for the Gothenburg symphony orchestra during 1907-1922.

Wilhelm Stenhammar is absolutely incredible. You can almost see the light Swedish summernights when listening to his music. Stenhammar and Hugo Alfvén embodies the Swedish soul.

This is a most attractive piece - I really enjoyed listening to it. Maybe one reason that Stenhammar is neglected is because he was a contemporary of composers such as Debussy, Ravel and Schoenberg, yet one might think from this that he was a contemporary of Brahms. I guess from the opus number that this is an early work - which could account for the influence. I wonder if his style had changed much by the time of his death in 1927??

Its sad that, there are so many good composers out there that should be much more recognised. In music class, you only ever hear of Mozart, Beethoven, possibly Chopin, Schubert, Schumann.... but composers like Rachmaninov, Medtner, Alkan, Sibelius, Stenhammar and many others should also deserve a place in the school books..
