The Wildweeds originated in the mid-Sixties in Windsor, Connecticut. Their album "Wildweeds" was released in 1970.

One of the songs from the album "And When She Smiles" was often performed by the Carpenters (as "And When He Smiles") in concerts during the early Seventies, but it was never recorded by them, except for a BBC television special. In 2001, 30 years after the Carpenters began performing it in concerts, Richard re-mixed the audio track from the BBC television special and released the song on the last Carpenters album "As Time Goes By."

Here's the original 1970 version performed by The Wildweeds. I have chosen to use the song as a tribute to Karen Carpenter, because indeed, when she smiled, she DID make the sun shine...

I'm originally from Bristol, CT...and grew up listening to Big Al and the Wildweeds. Followed them and NRBQ all over the place: Shaboo, Crystal Lake Ballroom, and all the other roadhouses they played. Great memories! Today, listening to their music recorded 45 years ago, I'm still struck with just how fantastic a band they really were. Big Al has made the big time, with his songs being recorded by the biggest names in country music today. Around Nashville, Al is one of THE most sought-after writers. Long live the 'Weeds!!!

I wish I could find guitar tablature or piano chords for this song. If anyone knows where I can get it, could you reply to my comment? Thanks! This version of the song cracks me up b/c when he says "She's a girl from the good old earth..." It's sounds like he's saying "She's a girl from the Google Earth..." :)

When I first met NRBQ they were razing me for being a Carpenters fan. When they told me the Carps had covered one of Al's tunes I thought they were pulling a fast one on me. Later another fan I had given a crappy live tape of the Carpenters to, mentioned that this tune was on it. Shame the Carpenters never officially released it. It suited Karen's voice and fit right in with their image.

I love Al Anderson, "The Wildweeds" album on Vanguard is really wonderful. And i'm almost a Carpenters fan... never really saw a reason to put them down.

Cute video. Comparing this version with Richard´s one... you realize how great arrangement he is.
