George Formby was the biggest star of his day with his films showing worldwide with the exception of the US where his films were rarely shown, he was also the highest paid. Very few Hollywood stars earned as much as he or were as famous. Unfortunately with the passing of time history gets changed to suit whoever is writing the story and I'm afraid because US media dominated the world of the 50s onwards, people like Formby got left out.
