Graham tunes the low E string to D for this (and for most of the other tunes he plays guitar on). This is from the 1983 tour.

I think I can safely say that theory is for guys like me who got frying pans for ear drums but you dont need it. but you taught me stuff that would have taken me a lifetime to figure out and I just want to say Thank You Sir!

I've never had any lessons, so whatever skills I have came from spending time with the instrument and listening to a lot of music. I would imagine taking lessons is the better route. I would love to know something about music theory, but I know nothing about anything like that.

great stuff PT, I am a very intense guy in everything I do including music, but I am not even 20 pct of you when it comes to enthusiasm about music, and as a player. Did you get this good by just playing a ton or did you start out with a good teacher? dumb ass like me is taking lessons after 30 years WASTED ON THE WAY :)

@j7777777 That's a G, or at least a partial G. The low E string is tuned to D, so to play the G you play the 2 bass strings at the 5th fret. You're essentially strumming the EADG strings without hitting the high BE strings. Graham actually thumbs that G note at the 5th fret, then plays the BE strings at the 3rd fret. He uses that chord quite a bit (check out the versions of Teach Your Children on YouTube).

@moterani Well, I would say something smartass like "The tone's all in the fingers," but the truth is, the guitar does sound amazing!
