This upbeat version of "Warpaint" with Josh on drums is truly wonderful! Corridor (Michael Quinn) was also part of the line-up that night, and I guess this was the night the girls asked him to join their tour, because Josh had to rehearse with the Chili Peppers.

A few words from Recording LA ---

The night started off pretty quiet for (first act) Corridor and Caroline Weeks, but things really started to pick up by the time Warpaint hit the stage. Warpaint has become very popular over the past year - I have been seeing this band's name practically everywhere, but had not gotten the opportunity to see them until now. They are very good, remind me a little of Autolux. They may pop up on this blog again in the future. The photo featured was shot by Jeff Koga. More of this set can be found in this album.

Warpaint is the storm brewing off at sea causing ill weather on land many miles ashore. A friend told me watching Warpaint fills her with dark thoughts. What, with all the throbbing bass and moaning cries that pace across your face from ear to throat to unkempt brow—maybe what she says is worth noting. It can be a challenge to listen, but then again Warpaint is possibly messing with some hocus pocus. There's nothing pretty about the band except their cool faces. Instead, they want to enter your ear canal and scrape the wax blocking access to some hard facts of existence. Warpaint has the primal thing going on. It's the baby's first cry of what the fuck am I alive what the fuck ok cool I guess.

WARPAINT:

"Warpaint" is still one of my very favorite songs. I also greatly enjoyed witnessing the band's development through all of those different recordings. IMO, there are 5 stages of progress in this song:

1) Warpaint, the instrumental demo

2) Warpaint, first live version with lyrics

3) Warpaint, upbeat with Josh Klinghoffer on drums (like this one)

4) Warpaint, the strong mesmerizing intro song with lyrics only at the beginning

5) Warpaint, with the "monsters" voices like on The Fool
