You know, I probably should retract my qualification about the money thing. I don't really think it matters that he had money, rather where it came from. Money is a material thing, not a spiritual thing. It doesn't matter whether you have a lot or not as long as the music you produce (and/or enjoy) is good. Although most good musicians are indeed poor, at least when they begin (and always if they're BMers lol). And yes, the problem with our society is it has become too watered down... soulless.

And FWIW, I'm and American and actually live in the Midwest, and while there are a couple of decent USBM bands in the area, the vast majority suck. The only thing I will say to his credit was that he played Under the Black Sun, but even then, that was early in its days and I suspect the promoters didn't know better at the time. They've had very few US bands since then...

Most black metal artists come from an middle class life. Especially Norway. You seem to be upset that someone from the Midwest could produce black metal, but you forget about how the American Midwest is full of the sons of German and Scandinavian immigrants.
