You guys are putting too much stock in how YOU think this song should be performed. I don't care if you're right; don't tear down someone's performance because they interpreted the song differently than you. Though I do recommend the CSULB rendition- it's fabulous.

I'm really sorry that your narrow mind can only define the "soul" in one particular way, as if you're the judge of what has it and what doesn't. I'm also sorry that your narrow mind automatically jumps to the race card (as most simple-minded folks tend to do). It's awfully funny how the people who demand equality and tolerance from everyone else are often the most prejudiced and hateful themselves.

It has everything to do with "soul". Soul is not about "sounding like Black people", it's uncontrived and unorchestrated, it is the pure expression of the struggle with the Self, without regard for how those who are listening may feel about it. These women spend most of their time trying to sound "sexy", so there will never be any soul. There is a deep meaning in the words of this song which is entirely lost on these performers.

The live versions are more powerful, but this studio version is much cleaner. Also transposed up a bit, and a lot faster. Anyone have a guess as to why?
