Update: Check out my new mic showdown featuring the Rode and MXL, plus a Jade tube condenser and an SM Pro Audio MC01! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZGQ6I9itJPw

This video is a shootout between the Rode NTG2 shotgun condenser, MXL 990 large diaphragm condenser, and the Audio Technica AE6100 dynamic hyper-cardioid.

I work predominantly in ad-reading, so wanted to see how these mics stacked up against each other for this purpose.

The winner in my ears is the Rode, followed by the MXL and lastly the Audio Technica. The Rode not only sounds the best to me, but it also wins extra points because I can run it off a 1.5v AA battery and take it out on the road. The MXL is highly recommended because it's just so darn cheap. And the AT is great for other uses both live and in the studio, just not the best for voiceover work.

The other microphone in the booth is a Jade tube mic, which I can never get sounding quite right. So I ignored it for this video.

Oh, and I apologise if I'm rambling a bit!

I have an at2020. What mic stand would you recommend for it? I'm completely lost on how to improve the sound booth I have right now...

The Rode sounded the best of those.

Do you have any EQ or compression settings on those mics you'd be willing to share?

The 6100 gets a little bit of proximity bass boost when you close up. But not too much. The bass still stays very nicely clear and not boomy at all.

Very good comparison and thanks for no effects,it throws everything off. The Rode is nicely clear and warm and the MXL is very clear and flat sounding. I feel that the Audio Tecnica would serve as a good vocal singing mic. A de esser is always good with such accurate somewhat bright mics. Your selling style is excellent. Thanks!T

The AT sounded a bit harsh in the mid highs compared to the other two. The Rode sounds very warm. The MXL, I can tell because of the size of the diaphragm picks up a lot more detail hence the reason why the room would need acoustic treatment for best results. All'n all, I like the MXL.

Rode has a slightly deeper bass response which might be better for a radio broadcast. The other two sound closer to each other with a bit of sizzle compared to the Rode ...they all sound good though!!

See why the 990 is a hot seller, I prefer the sound. 100 bucks US helps just a bit.

Hmmmm, I think for voice overs the MXL 990 was better. It had a richer sound. The NTG2 & AE6100 both sounded great (little difference to my ears) as they had a "cleaner" more natural as you might want when capturing a singing voice. For the money, that MXL 990 is a great mic.

I hear quite a lot of sibilance (ssss). I recommend you to place and point mics in different angle to reduce this.
