I have never heard the best vicino a te before... Exciting! Though I am not a Callas and Del Monaco fan

Ah! BRAVI! This is simply electrifying to my ears. The applause at the end proves it. Thanks for uploading such a treasure from the Golden Era. We shall never hear the likes of this again, ever. Simply thrilling beyond words.

La Scala had originally scheduled Trovatore with del Monaco and Callas. But del Monaco decided he didn't want to sing Trovatore and demanded to do Chenier instead and Callas agreed to learn it for the three performances.

Great. And intense, propulsive conducting. Very exciting. This is really opera as the arena.

Malgré la précarité de la prise de son - il s'agit d'un pirate - il reste pour moi la meilleure version que je connaisse de cet opéra, mais je ne les ai pas toutes entendues.

We were so lucky to have both Callas and Tebaldi on record, both were unique individuals that exemplified high art.Their voices were of the highest standards, anyone who speaks so negatively against them has cotton wool in their ears. You need to go and listen to Flemming and Bartoli, who are not even shadows of these great singers.

MDM also doesn't shout,it's his volume of voice that was in a category of phenomenal voices with Zenatello DeMuro&Volpi. When the diction is superb as Del Monaco's is,everything comes out clear¬ muddled. To say his voice is "non educated' is a statement from a person that did not do any research.MDM was perhaps the greatest dramatic voice since 1940 or longer. He could not be heard past the3rd row when1st appearing.More than 10 signature roles&over 400 Otello's with 3 different interpretations

Del Monaco does use mezza voce & he was a master of his complicated technique, along with great breath facility throughout his career.MDM will not give you the refinement of a lyricGigli orBjorling, but he gives you a dramatic interpretation ofChenier as he was a dramatic tenor.Chenier was among MDM's10plus signature roles.Besides having a beautiful voice, you neglected to mention impeccable diction, the ability to express anger more than any other tenor, declamations, impetus phrasing&great hi-notes

MDM cannot sing...where there is to shout he is ok (like in this marvelous duet)...but he has no filato, no mezza voce, incorrect breathing..He has nothing of the refined art of singing...he had a very beautiful non educated voice...Alas...an incrdible talent thrown away...

MDM is really a force of nature.I realize that no artist is perfect but Callas and Del Monaco are my favorite soprano and tenor. In an interview here on YT,MDM mentions that Tebaldi had a beautiful voice, but Callas had something special about her that made him a better singer.Perhaps Callas had some testosterone as well.Enjoy

Yes, in my ignorance I used to think the same thing, now after many years of listening to numerous great singers I realize how wrong I was! Her voice does sound unpleasant under pressure but for total commitment and emotional involvment in a role there is simply no one to touch her - Listen to her singing "Printemps qui Comence" cond. Pretre and you'll hear the greatest singing of all time.

That's a good point. The conductors won the battle because they didn't have to sing.Del Monaco also was a dramatic tenor with a low pitched solid voice with great consistent hi-notes up to B-natural.I don't believe that he transposed beyond acceptable practices.Interesting that George jellinek(WQXR THURSDAY evenigs) mentioned that MDM had a trick soprano voice&joked that perhaps he would sing as a soprano 1 day.I didn't think so at the time.Too much testosterone.

@sugarbist Yes! it was not transposed down for Callas and when he sang it with Tebaldi live it's down but when She sang it with Tucker in 1957 live it was in key with high B. MDM sang it on recording with Tebaldi in key in the 1950's and the Video I bought long ago with Gencer in Trov. was a studio performance, from what I was told at that time he felt the aria like so many others was better for him to sing B in Di Quella rather then High C even though he had a D flat in that recording!
