When Hoagy Carmichael teamed up with Mitchell Parish, they had decided to add lyrics to the tune that Carmichael had composed, and after the lyrics were published in 1929, ever since then, a lot of big bands like Glenn Miller and the Dorsey Brothers had decided to record, and so this idea was passed on to singers like Frank Sinatra, Connie Francis, Louis Armstrong, Nat King Cole, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald, Willie Nelson, and many other people as well as Barry Manilow, Billie Holiday, Keely Smith and Dizzy Gillespie. A lot of crooners have made a record of this novelty tune, such as those versions of Nat King Cole and Frank Sinatra, but one of those versions that never made it to the chart but had a great tune was that of Vic Damone.
