To me this song is about the frustration of loving someone and needing them and trying to be there for them but theyre independent and dont really keed you and you cant trust them with your heart because youre afraid theyre gonna leave

Okay so I know there's plenty of theories of what the story line is but here's my opinion. Again this is MY OPINION. Everyone has there own opinion on music and that's what makes it beautiful. To me when I hear this song our protagonist and Hannah are a couple who are deeply in love but only have each other. In the song our couple is moving state to state but to me I don't think they're on a road trip I believe they're running from something. Running from what though? I think they're constantly moving all over the country because they don't want to get caught. Throughout the song our protagonist constantly mentions "Though we live on the US dollar". To me this means our couple is constantly running away and they're living on the US dollar because they robbed a bank. They robbed a bank and they're going all over the country because they don't want to get caught and when "Hannah tore the New York Times up into pieces" to me it means literately what it means. Hannah picked up the New York Times and saw they were Wanted on the front page so she tears it up and feels guilty. And when they get back on the road our protagonist notices Hannah can't take it anymore and she's done with running away so he tells her "If I can't trust you then damn it Hannah. There's no future, there's no answer. Thought we live on the US dollar. You and me, we got our own sense of time." And the climax at 2:40 Hannah can't take living like this anymore so she opens the door and jumps out on the road. Then our protagonist immediately stops on the side of the road almost crashing and gets out and runs to Hannah crying and tells her again "If I can't trust you then damn it Hannah. There's no future, there's no answer. Thought we live on the US dollar. You and me, we got our own sense of time." Basically meaning I have nothing left in this world except for you.

I hesitate to call this pretty because it isn't. It's beautiful, from beginning to end, but pretty it certainly is not. Yet that's what it FEELS like in the beginning: pretty, sweet, lovely...and then the inevitability of human frailty messes it up. Story of everyone's life.
