UB40 performed their first gig in 1979 in their home city of Birmingham. They got their initial break when they were spotted by Chrissie Hynde and invited to support The Pretenders on their upcoming UK tour. Their debut double A side single King / Food For Thought climbed to No.4 in the UK charts in 1980 and their first album Signing Off, released the same year, reached No.2. This concert, filmed at the Sartory-Sale in Cologne in July 1981 for the Rockpalast TV series, followed hot on the heels of the release of their second album Present Arms, which also hit the No.2 spot. The set list is drawn almost exclusively from those two albums and includes all their early hits.

still listen to this gr8 group of peoples after 30 years they are still the bees knees :) this is why the song was written and sang -->This song is about the famine in Ethiopia in about 1984. Manna is the food that miraculously appeared in the desert to feed the Israelites, now Western aircraft promise miracles, but death is the certain harvest. Politicians sharpening their knives - at the time of famine, there was also war within Ethiopia, in which foreign countries (US, USSR as was) also played a role.Ethiopians usually have a very beautiful dark and fine skin. So we might consider them "ebony" rather than "ivory". But maybe the unfortunate woman appears white through the paleness of near-death, or maybe from the dust. Many Ethiopians are Christians, belonging to one of the oldest Christian churches in the world, and are very religious.Food for thought at Christmastime of 1984, and now too. Even now, there is near starvation in parts of Ethiopia and Somalia - while the US encourages Ethiopia to invade Somalia.

Best thing they've done. Ever! Beats all that "labour of love" crap they churned out ever since.

I found the love of my life listening to this song in 1982, its a classic young people should respect our feelings during that time, they weren`t even born then. There was no handy no internet no hiphop no whatever is of value nowadays, we just had Ub40,BobnarleyburningspearIjahmenlevi etc. grass and love and freedom it was a great time. Wish the young people nowadays could have such great times too, but I fear they can`t.
