Greetings from Greece, all of us here in what is left of the Eastern Roman Empire have eternal respect for the Varangian Guard, those brave men who lived amongst us and died with us for the preservation of the Empire in the Orient. Since our young age we are taught of the many victories the ERE won because of the presence of but a few battalions of Northmen who with their courage and determination stood their ground, be that the Balkan front against the Pechenegs or Asia Minor against the Seljuks and the Holly Lands against the Arabs. We are also taught how the elite Varangians Northmen bodyguard of Emperor Romanos died to the last man in Manzikert to keep him alive from the encroaching numbers surrounding him, when the Emperor was found unconscious he was literally underneath the corps of those heroic Northmen who according to the records has killed 5 times their numbers before falling.And of course every Greek knowns the story of the majestic King Sigurd the Crusaders who became friends with our Emperor Alexios I and gifted him his Dragon boats so that the Empire could increase her fleet in the Mediterranean and how the Emperor gifted him his finest horses and gave him many treasures to take back to his country.Greeks will always be grateful to those giants from the North that honored us with their friendship and stood with us in some many hardships.

The majority of Varangians were Norwegian, Danish, Saxon and Anglo-Saxon. Obviously, there were others, but they were the bulk of the guard.
