It's not the same. Two guitarists can play completely different complimentary parts; harmonies/counter-point; different rhythms/finger picking patterns...endless possibilities since melody is horizontal and vertical. Drumming is almost all horizontal. If you watch all three guitarists, they are all doing something different. The drummers are basically doing the same pattern. Now, if that 2nd drummer had a kit with instruments with different tibres (timbales/bongos,etc) it would make sense.

Having 2 drummers is just the same as having 2 guitar players. People only go daft about it because it's not common.

they do have a pretty good cult following... but they are in no way as big when they first got known in austin. mind you, i lived in austin during their successful peak. a friend of mine was roommates with the drummer and another friend of mine dated the singer. everyone in austin doesn't really consider them "big" those days have passed them.
