Here is a 5-min video I made for a music class I had. It explains the song's connection to the Fibonacci sequence. Hope you enjoy.

I actually think Maynard is trolling all of us when he sings "Reaching out to embrace the random". Maybe we should try to resist imbuing the song with so much meaning, and accept that Tool's creativity is a little more 'random' than that.

i had a thought on time signatures, the verses/prechorus whatever is in 5/8, as is the drum pattern in the "I embrace my desire to feel the rhythm..." bit, and 5 precedes 8 in the fib sequence. the 6/8 after that though i don't really have an answer...maybe it's like they break structure or something to show he overcomes adhering to patterns or something and is 'embracing the random'? i think clutching at straws here though...

Fibonacci is a sequence that exist in all things in our reality.. To think that Tool planned this or it's somehow more meaningful is missing the point, and is generally a sophomoric view point. You could go find Fibonacci in a spice girl song if you wanted to. Maynard has commented on this funny obsession that people have with looking too deeply into things that have greater meaning in their simplicity. Great song though :)

To the guy who made this video, I hope you got an "A" on this in your class!

@babytweeze85 And also, 987 makes sense since Danny and Adam have specifically said in interviews that it's in 9-8-7. This shouldn't even be up for debate. Not trying to take sides, but you're right: it's all Fibonacci, all day. Just sayin'.

@Nothingtearsthebeast and online tabs mean nothing. They're going to dumb down the songs because 996 is easier for kids to learn than rotating times. It makes way more sense that math nerds Danny and Adam would write it 987

@Nothingtearsthebeast considerably easier? Yes...right? No...it's 3 sets of one measure of 9 one of 8 and one of 7. Adam's chord changes are dead on the downbeat of 1 of each measure. If you count the 2nd 5th and 8th measures in 9 the changes happen mid measure. And more to the point 987 is the 16th number in the Fibonacci sequence which is what this song is written around. 996 means nothing. I'm more inclined to believe Danny and Adam wrote it in 9 8 7 time.

@Nothingtearsthebeast don't forget the main riff..one measure of 9/8 one measure of 8/8 then one measure of 7/8 then repeat the order.

Very good analysis. I think they like to tuck things like this away in their music sometimes. For instance, look up one of their new tracks, Jambi, and you might be interested to find out how the lyrics were formulated for that. cheers

@Nothingtearsthebeast Can you please explain that to me? I do have knowledge of time sigs, but can't count this.
