Tony Banks - Lion Of Symmetry - Album: Soundtracks - Vocals: Toyah Wilcox

Lyrics:

The stars ignite as the sun sets

And disappears in a river of dancing molten gold

In the moon rise the lion steps out tonight

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again

No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains

The office walls are closing in

As the telex machines perversely sing ignored

You're hypnotised and the lion roars within

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again

No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains

Why are we here? not just to live and breathe

I cannot sleep, I need the beast

I need some action, I need destruction

I'll return to the wild, I'll return to the child I said

No sense of emotion adrift in the ocean

Here we are knee-deep in stars, knee-deep in stars

City nights caressed in a shroud

All is quiet and the silence is tentatively loud

You kiss the streets as you crawl on your hands and feet

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again

No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains

Why are we here? not just to live and breathe

I cannot sleep, I need the beast

I need some action, I need destruction

I'll return to the wild, I'll return to the child I said

No sense of emotion adrift in the ocean

Here we are knee-deep in stars, knee-deep in stars

Moving in the darkness

Phosphorus eyes, jungle pride

A glisten of madness, a wave of sadness

The lion never sleeps, he's never at peace

He stalks so boldly, so nervous, so coldly

Vicious serenity, perverse intensity

Head bowed stretched proudly, embrace the earth

Same blood, same soul, same breath, same goal

The office walls are closing in, feel the sensation

Telex machines perversely sing raw communication

And you're hypnotised, a transformation

The lion steps out tonight

And you kiss the damp streets with ease

As you crawl on your hands and feet

Naked is the beast and the beast is forever free

You are the lion, you are the lion of symmetry

Golden warrior savage, savage creature

You are the lion, you are the lion of symmetry

No law, no sin, no rip it up and start again

No tears, no pain, no fear, no more chains...

@learrus Thanks for sharing your story. Glad to hear this song was there to help you through your tough times. It's funny, I've been attracted to Tony's music for over 20 years now and still feel it to be as fresh as ever. I get the sense that even Tony's not fully aware of how deep his music is.

I loved listening to this song while living in the city the last few years... Every night I had to go out and collect cans to get enough money for some food and weed for the day, I'd listen to this on repeat on the MP3 player I found... Doing much better now in terms of fiscal positioning... Music like this definitely gets you through some weird shit...

315Mikey, thanks for that analysis: worth its weight in African gold! I'm still trying to envision the dance floor at your prom, whilst Toyah wailed...

This is musically one of if not THE most masterfully crafted songs in existence. It's most intense moments are the quietest. The continuous modulations in the latter half of the break and the push-pull between the major and minor keys throughout provide subtle yet dramatic mood changes symbolic of the push-pull of everyone's needs and desires. An eerily wonderful song. One interesting sidenote; I slipped this song into the rotation at my senior prom!

"Vicious serenity, perverse intensity," as only Tony Banks could put it. I remember reveling in this number a quater century ago, and noting that Toyah, growling "Golden warrior, savage, savage creature," sounds gloriously like Katherine Hepburn! Another amazing Tony Banks artistic triumph. The music is pure Banksian heaven.

I think the central message of the song is that within each human being is the primal instinct to fight against what oppresses you. The lyrics and the music effectively drive this theme home, it feels viciously serene, with driving intensity. Banks' keyboards are moody, rough, intense, and coupled with Toyah's vocals, it sounds seductively haunting. We all have a dark side to us that has to be reckoned with. Love this track. Post more songs from this album please.
