tom waits is musically and lyrically gifted..i just cannot understand why he FORCES his voice to be as GRUFF as can be..seriously, when he speaks normally, he has a fine dramatic voice.but when he sings, it is worse...he deliberately does that..well, geniuses are like that,,,they care less but i admire him a lot

There's a lot of chords in this song... The main progression consistent throughout the song is Am to D7, sometimes it goes to E, sometime to Am, B/G, Csus2. Hopefully that provides a rough guide.
