Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers perform "Straight Into Darkness" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.

A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.

Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

Great song by TP. "The weak ones fall, the strong carry on." As in so many things in life. A real testament to perseverance and faith.

I don't know what it is about this song, no matter how many times I hear it I feel like I could just close my eyes and fly away.

"I don't believe the good times are over/I don't believe the thrill is all gone/Real love is a man's salvation/The weak ones fall...the strong carry on" - This one hits deep - You are going to dip in life and lose who you are or were at some point. then you build yourself back up. Don't waste time and put that darkness behind you once at for all, ASAP!

It didn't get by me! Tom Petty is the most underrated singer/songwriter/ guitar player ever and to think he started back in the day like so many others- the 70's- he's just been there all along, a position I know he appreciates. He keeps great company. Check out his current radio program on Sirius XM channel 25- awesome stuff- the guy is so grounded and rock'n'roll to the bone!

This is the best version of this song, by far. back in 1985 I recorded this onto a cassette tape off the radio and played the hell out of it through my college years.

What a great number! All the more so because I've never heard it before. It's not like I haven't followed Tom and the Heartsmashers .... I have .... this one just got by me. It's great to find it now anyway. There is so much garbage around these days, it's just that much better to find a fantastic song like this one!

This song is incredible. They've managed to make it melancholy and energetic both at once. One of my favorites by Tom.

Couldn't agree more, nothig wrong with his playing but this is a GUITAR driven song and should stay that way.

This is during the Pack Up The Plantation tour. They added a horn section (The Soul Lips) and three female back-up singers. While it added an interesting dimension to some songs, I prefer my TP&THB unadulterated. However, Kudos to Scott Thurston for his promotion to Official Heartbreaker.
