Film composers almost always are master improvisors on piano. Most don't consciously know where the chords are progressing in their initial playing. Tapes must be made and the voicing, chord progressions, and chords themselves are often changed to best fit the music. As far as the orchestra scoring, this is a separate and difficult task. Many composers will use experienced writers to transcribe what they have written on piano to orchestra. It takes years for a composer to fully understand the limitations and strengths of every instrument in the orchestra. Even Beethoven never seemed satisfied with his orchestral scoring. Traditional scoring can be taught. Composing can only be coached.

Thomas Newman....huh. I kept meaning to go online and find out who did the music in Meet Joe Black. I recorded the movie on my DVR, watched the whole thing for the first time. The music had a huge impact on me. The music had a huge impact on the story line. I consider myself to have a good ear for quality music and sound. Thomas Newman, you are blowing me away, here. I like good rock and roll and all sorts of music, but your style is right up there with Mr. Gershwin.....I thought for sure when I searched, it would refer to Gershwin. Your music penetrates a core within. It's like some sort of weird magic, cannot explain it. Very mesmorizing, emotional, you hit the bulls eye, dude.
