I went from assuming this song was about the world in the eyes of a moth, to it being about a stalker who "thought we had this big connection" and he just needs a number and location to come into her french windows. He's convinced himself he's in love, really he's obsessed and can't help but stick around her. He wants her to guide him in and smother him which is pretty sexual (she doesn't). He swoops around but never hits which suggests she either doesn't notice him or doesn't seem to actually care about him the way he does for her. He says "I only got my name I only got this situation" which suggests on some level he knows he's being rejected, but he takes no responsibility for who he is and how he is and cannot accept it. He can't look her in the eyes too which shows the malfunction of his logic. When you love someone you should be able to look them in the eyes especially if it's mutual. He can't and claims it's because he's desperately in love, but it actually suggests he knows it's not mutual and he's doing wrong by her. I just really see this being a stalker/ready to rape scenario. Plus you hear snakes throughout the background and he mentions "without appropriate papers or permissions I'm known to bite in tight situations"..I see that as not taking no for an answer/he will bite if angered/rejected...he will do what he wants whether it's condoned or not (hence the snakes), and his mum is basically telling him "you're a fool...for sticking around". Basically saying don't do this, let it go/change your ways..leave. "the Devil may". Trying to talk him out of doing anything immoral/evil because she probably knows her son's ailments in fighting temptation. These lyrics would be the logic of someone who acts inappropriately thinking their feelings/urges justify their behavior. I'm trying so hard not to interpret it this way, but after hearing it so many times it's at least clear to me this is not a love song.
