I heard this cover many years before I even knew it was a cover. While I can appreciate the sentiments of Van Morrison loyalists who don't like it, I think their dislike really is more about sentiment than about whether or not this is a good cover, because musically and artistically, the Ivo Watts Russell arrangement as performed by TMC is sheer genius.

Amazing cover of a Van Morrison's great song. Even if Van Morrison original song is very good however I prefer TMC version. In my opinion all TMC versions are better than originals. Ivo Watts Russell is a genius!

I've always been a fan of Van. But I always thought songs like this or "The Way Young Lovers Do" (by Jeff Buckley) had a darkness in them that wasn't made explicit until younger musicians started exploring Van's music. If you want to hear another Van song that mines this kind of bitter-sweet territory, look up "Van Morrison Twilight Zone."

I too grew up on TMC. All 3 albums are like precious jewels. Ivo Watts-Russell is the curator of angels. This song, the only one sung by the eponymous "Jean", is stunning, seductive, and chilling.

The best Van Morrison cover around. The guy behind This Mortal Coil knew his shit and had incredable talent behind him. All 3 TMC albums are amazing, this one being a fav of mine. Wonderful. Made living through the 80s bearable.
