Lyrics & Information

Taken from one of their most explosive albums ; 'Vagabonds of the Western World'. One of my favourite Eric Bell guitar tracks, he just goes insane toward the end. Incredible lyrics as usual follow and this song is open to many interpretations which I love.

Lyrics :-

The Hero, rode a white horse

Across the desert

To where his woman was

He'd been riding

For four days

When he saw the tower

Where she was locked

In the moonlight, he left his old steed

Near the drawbridge, that he crossed

And by way of a rope ladder

He tippie-toed to where, his woman was

If I recall, you're the actor who followed the stars

Searching for the lost city of Mars

Hoping time, could heal the scars

Knowing Fate held no bars

Those that knew ya

Always said you'd go far

Are you the one, I think you are?

Oh are you the hero?

Oh are you the madman?

Oh are you the hero

Oh are you the madman

The madman, climbed the steeple spire

"Go higher, go higher!", said the crowd from down below

"But the world's on fire!", said the madman from the steeple

"You're a liar, you're a liar!" said the crowd from down below

So the madman climbed the steeple spire

And let a crystal ball tear fall

On the crowd down below

If I recall, you're the actor who took to the stage

Set the world ablaze, with your anger and your rage

And with every new leaf, you turned and wrote a new page

Cleverly concealing, your real age

Those that knew ya

Were always quite amazed

Are you the one, that can take this praise?

Oh, are you the hero?

Oh, are you the madman?

Oh, are you the hero

Oh, are you the madman

"You're the only one that can save us", cried the wizard

"Or all is lost."

[Furious solo and end]

Love this one, I get a real Hendrix type vibe from it, from the atmosphere to the lyrical content and delivery. It could also be about Hendrix, there's a few references in there that you could connect to Hendrix's songsIt can fit so many things, that's what is great about it and music in general, but I personally choose the Hendrix angle.

Bought this on a trip during high school daze 1974. My friends thought I was a god when we smoked and listened.

the one thing i loved about TL in the early years, when they had freedom & ability to express there talent, until the record company said there songs were too long & wanted them to produce hits!

Ah, sorry. I should have been more specific. I meant Eric pioneered the twin guitar sound in the band which became the signature sound after he had left. Cheers for the info!

@sbyrne1 what i mean is his use of multi track recording. He is known for more then just making guitars.

Perhaps, but I'm drawn to the under-appreciated guitarists mostly

maybe you should look into Les Paul a bit more.

Are you kidding ? I think Eric is great !!!! The solo in this tune is absolutely fantastic, one of my favourite ever, and so are many other Eric's soloes, as in "The rocker" for example.

Yes. Bell's genius isn't understood by many fans of the band that want to blast "Boys Are Back In Town." Bell's not a flashy guy nor does he seek to overpower the music, he compliments it and takes it to a whole new level. The journey and feel he injects into the music make his era in Thin Lizzy utterly unique. Truly creative, original and artful. The guy deserves huge accolades. He was never like Phil, who actively sought stardom.

One might say, with Bell leaving they took a turn for the bland. They dumbed it down pretty dramatically in the next few years after this album. This album still screams creativity and originality. 'Live and Dangerous' - yawn. Next.

Probably the song I've listened to most & most consistently overall since I discovered Lizzy 23 years ago. I love the way it builds; I love the bass lines; I love the drumming; and of course I love Eric's guitar building to the monster solo! If only I could play it, but I've never got near, & being a "rare" song I've never seen any tab. Often wondered if it was ever played live? Also wondered why they faded it down whilst Eric was still going strong!?
