Eric Clapton was the first lead guitarist of the Yardbirds. He wanted to only play old blues, the band wanted to go more "pop" for radio air play. Clapton left and went back to construction work. Next Jeff Beck joined, a few problems.... He got tired very fast of his band mates saying Eric wouldn't play it that way. "I'M NOT ERIC!" and his girlfriend didn't want him to tour.... might have been some ..drinking too much issues... He left the band. They called on studio musician Jimmy Page next. There are some videos of Beck and Page both playing in the Yardbirds.... the band was changing looking for a new name... THE NEW YARDBIRDS ?? Jimmy Page said that would go over like a lead Leppelin...Thus Led Leppelin. The fued between Clapton, Beck and Page continued for many years... they claim to have not played together... there are some youtube vids of them together. I was lucky enough to have seen Beck and Steve Winwood play at Clapton's CROSS ROADS in 2009 . My 2nd LP ever was FOR YOUR LOVE Yardbirds...Fan since 1965

There was a period of time when this was IT This was the most interesting thing to listen to. And I was listening to this in '79, I only heard stuff on the radio, but when I found out Jimmy Page was in this old '60's band it intrigued me and I found that Jeff Beck, and Eric Clapton were in the group. The best lineup was with Clapton when they did 'Smokestack LIghtning', but this song 'I'm a Man' was something else. They got me into more purist blues rock stuff when I was into Prog Rock.
