Please see below frontman Paul Simpson's notes on the song. An absolute heart melter by Scouse heroes The Wild Swans, taken from the compilation album, 'INCANDESCENT' (1982). LISTEN LOUD.

Paul Simpson - vocals. Jeremy Kelly - guitar. Ged Quinn - keyboards. Baz Hughes - bass. Joe McKechnie - drums.

"When Jeremy and Ged first started circling this intro pattern at rehearsels one Saturday morning I got shivers down my neck and knew it had the potential to blossom into a stone-cold classic. Once I had the first line "Black clouds approaching, once my mettle held fast". It all came pouring out at once like I was channeling it from the hereafter. The title (which never appears in the lyric) came a few days later. I always heard it as a command: you know, suffer in silence. In my opinion the band's finest moment." - Paul Simpson.

Just fantastic. What a song. Takes me back to early 80s Liverpool. Play some more gigs Simmo!

Anger and sorrow mix so well. A dwindling spirit reaching for the light with so much self-loathing one can ever possibly imagine. But in spite of himself there exists within a melancholic hope... That time for redemption and change!Superb song and execution. Missing Jem, Ged, and Paul original lineup.

This song is great. I love the Wild Swans. "Space Flower" is one of the best albums of all time, imo.

Chorus: When you've lost the will to carry on, When your wretched spirit's broken and all hope of it is gone Do you tell you sorrows to a bottle, scrape each barrel that you find? Curse the woman that conceived you, can the world be so unkind? To a boy with ambition lost and drinking heavily, Braving jeers of sad derision on a harsh and foaming sea Do you tell your troubles to a bottle..etc.

Verse: Black clouds approaching, once my mettle held fast Now my courage is melting, with the ice in my glass Head under covers, so awesome a goal Poor boy you suffer, faint heart, thirsty soul.

No, its "cos the world only conceived you, can the world be so unkind", I believe.

No, it's "head under covers, saw all summer go. Poor boy you suffer, faint heart, thirsty soul"..... He spends the whole summer lounging around in his bed feeling sorry for himself, you see :) It is "scrape each barrel", yes. I think line line after "wretched spirit's broken", is "and your hope's already gone" isnt it? Its an amazing song, probably one of my top 5 favourites of all time.

I've always heard, "So awesome a goal" and then "World, will you suffer?" The chorus is very hard to make out. I know it is "SCRAPE each barrel that you find" and "To a boy with ambition, lost and drinking heavily Bringing cheers and glad delusion on a harsh and foaming sea" What the hell is said after "When your wretched spirit's broken"? I can never figure that out no matter how hard I listen. Any ideas?

Simply glorious. My tuppenceworth for the lyrics - I've always heard "Head under covers / Saw summer go" and "Curse the woman that conceived you", but I could be wrong.. anyway Paul Simpson could sing the phonebook and I'd still be in raptures :)

Lyrics (maybe): Black clouds approaching Once my mettle held fast Now my courage is melting With the ice in my glass Head under covers [So awesome I've gone / Snow or summer gold / So what some have gold] Oh boy you suffer Fate have thirsty soul

You tell your sorrows to a bottle [Drink/break] each barrel that you find There's no woman that can see [me/you] Can the world world be so unkind? To a boy with ambition Lost and drinking heavily Great big [jeers/cheers] of [mad/sad] derision On a harsh and foaming sea

Lol peel sessions always sound better than album versions. Not that I know if there's an album version of this though. It's just that Peel magic! :)
