nah mate...Andy Lewis committed suicide from Gambling addiction...after this album was released...Stevie committed suicide from drugs I thnk and this is about him. Poor whitlams....

It's about addiction, but not drug addiction. Stevie Plunder committed suicide after becoming addicted to playing poker machines. The Eternal Nightcap album was written in his memory.

The song isn't about drug addiction. It's about the suicide of one of the co-founders of the Whitlams, Stevie Plunder. Tim wrote the three Charlies as a series of moments of Stevie's downfall. Charlie #2 is a moment in hindsight where Tim realised something was wrong but didn't know how lost Stevie was. It's the regret of thinking that Tim might have been able to do something if he had known, but mostly the bitterness and anger within those left behind by the futility of suicide. Amazing song.
