I don't really think it's because he got sloppy man, every verse is a little different. One thing for sure, any time you are on that regular C, the last note before the switch is always open, and on the other C, coming from the D, in the first two verses its open. The way you played it is cool, like you said a simple version. I ended up obsessing over it and couldn't figure out why it just didn't sound right when I played with it. I may put up a video how to play it exact, its really hard.
