I used to sneak into their gigs in the late 80's when they played in Dublin, which was a lot! They were so good live, if they tour with their new album I'll definitely be there. Great song! Lots of fun memories!

If only these attention-hungry hacks that call themselves "artists" had half the passion in their WRITING that The Waterboys have, we would have a lot less over-produced, under-talented, manufactured, passionless hacks that call themselves "bands". This song is as poignant, and meaningful today as it was when I heard it in high school. (1985)

And yes-- live they are UNBELIEVABLE. I've seen them three times, and two of those (Portsmouth Guildhall 1989 and Glasgow City Chambers 2011) are #1 and #2 in the top three concerts I've ever been at.

Fantastic song. The comedy of recognition; and the tragedy too.

I agree. A Pagan Place is one of my favorite albums released in 1984.

@hillman39 And they are still performing! Check out Mike Scott's site - Mick Puck on soundcloud. Live Savage Earth Heart track is fantastic.

I've seen many, many bands play live in my life. But these guys as a 15 year old in the Cork City Hall 20 years ago this December was still the best by a country mile. Real music, real musicians.

If it hadn't been for a trip to Scotland in the 90's, I might not have heard of this band as soon as I did!! Thank You Johnny McCallum!!!

@supasap Those are my 2 favorite songs by The Waterboys, but their song library is overflowing with other great tunes. They still tour and hit England in February. Here are a couple of songs that strike a nerve in me: Fisherman’s Blues (watch the Electric Picnic 2010 YouTube version of this song... outrageously good), I will not follow, And a Bang on the Ear, When ye go Away, A Girl Called Johnny.
