Personnel are: Patty Donahue - lead vocals, Chris Butler - guitar/lead vocals, Michael Aylward - guitar, Mark Price - bass, Ralph Carney - sax, Harvey Gold - keyboards and Stuart Austin - drums. Cassette recording restored and mastered at Wavelength Audio Mastering Studio, April 2011.

Anyone else get serious Sonic Youth vibes from this?

Sweet! A Waitresses song I haven't heard. Chris Butler continues to amaze me.

Trying to remember...but I think they used my soundcraft mix console for recording this. Maybe not, we were usually downstairs at JBs, but the soundcraft was quiet as a mouse and many a time it was 'borrowed' for live recording at JBs and the Bank in Akron. Someone with better memory maybe confirm or correct. Miss you Patty.

Did an A/B with an open mind, knowing from much experience that one can easily mix the life out of a tune, if not careful. There were some things done with how the vocals seat, and, at least on the system I wasusing , the mid bass EQ on the Smogveil version that I prefer. The version you posted, though, feels a little more live,... which is clearly a good thing as it, in fact, is a live recording!! Thanks for posting it. Chris wrote a great song here and it was crazy fun to play. Cheers.

Thus, the decision to use it and not the Smogveil master from Before Obscurity. Issues with the YouTube audio encoding notwithstanding, I invite anyone who owns the Before Obscurity CD to compare the two and see/hear what I mean.

In preparing this master, for a Waitresses project I might add, we examined the master used on Before Obscurity and found it to be inferior in terms of both sound quality and due to the fact that it contained several tape defects (dropouts around the “I don't play” phrase at 1:15, for example) that were not present on the source tape we eventually used.

However, I would like to address your comment about the “mixed multi-track” version used on the Before Obscurity CD, as it gives the impression that it would offer higher sound quality than what is presented here when, in fact, the oposite is the case.

Granted, our source was a Dolby-B encoded 3M Type IV cassette tape dubbed from the original 2-track stereo mixdown master in 1979, and although that presents challenges in itself, we found it to exhibit a cleaner, fuller sound, and to be free of many of the defects mentioned above.

Thanks for pointing out my mistake in the personnel listing for this song. I posted the information given to me, and the omission was not intentional and has now been corrected. As for the track itself, indeed this recording is available on the Tin Huey "Before Obscurity: The Bushflow Tapes”, and I would recommend that CD to anyone who enjoyed this song and would like to hear more early Tin Huey.

Someone up there must not like me... or Mark. Michael played guitar, Mark price played bass, and Harvey Gold played keyboards on this one. As noted below, mixed multi-track live recording of this song appears on Tin Huey's "Before Obscurity: The Bushflow Tapes," on Smogveil Records, available still as of today 7/10/2012.

Excellent! Many thanks for posting - do you have the whole show in lossless form? I have this on the Akron Compilation...are the musicians the same on there as here? One other thing I've noticed is that on my blue vinyl copy of the Akron Compilation, the 'hidden' track "Clones" isn't there, but on the black one, it is.

@lenevarez This track appears on the Tin Huey compilation, Before Obscurity: Bushflow Tapes, released in 2009 on Smog Veil Records, along with other rare live Tin Huey recordings from the late seventies.

Very early (maybe earliest?) live recording of The Waitresses.

If your Youtube stats tell you you've had a load of views from just one person today, that would be me. 80) Sounds like Zappa's band from the Bongo Fury album, probably the sax that does it. Great song!
