A bit more of a pop song this time, with an uptempo girlie cover of the Clyde McPhatter classic. The Vernons Girls started as a choir in the 1950s and went through many changes, ending up as a trio and featuring the famous horn-rimmed glasses of Maggie Stredder. Issued in the UK on Decca in 1962.

This isn't a cover of Clyde McPhatter's version. This was actually recorded before Clyde's version. Billy Swan wrote the song, but The Rhythm Steppers were the first to record it in 1960, followed by Dennis Turner '61, The Marvelettes '62, this version by The Vernons Girls '62 (this is more like the The Marvelettes version), and right after this version Clyde McPhatter recorded the most popular verion of the song also in 1962.

They don't write songs like this any more - 2 chords and a key change.. Is it any wonder?

@damoil She also went onto join The Ladybirds who are best remembered as the backing singers on The Benny Hill Show. They also did backing vocals on Top of the Pops and The Two Ronnies to name a few.

@kevinturvy Yes, of course I did! It was a warm day the crowd was having a party. I was with a really cute man and his son, we had a ball and we probably had really good sex when we got home!

@rhylmark No it wasn't Lily Savage, there was no floor show, they just played the track and everyone danced. Apparently the track was played every week, Maybe the D.J. was hoping to make it a hit bit like the D.J. somwhere who used to play Nina Simone "My baby just cares for me" in the late 80s, and when it was was re-released it eventually became a big hit 30 something years after she recorded it. Maybe he just played it because it's a great track and he liked it, everyone else did!
