To the rich man's bright lodges I ride in this windOn my good horse I call you my shiny Black BessTo the playhouse of fortuneto take the bright silverAnd gold you have taken from somebody elseAs we go riding in the damp foggy midnightYou snort, my good pony, and you give me your bestFor you know, and I know, good horse,'mongst the rich onesHow oftimes we go there an unwelcome guestI've never took food from the widows and orphansAnd never a hard working man I oppressedSo take your pace easy, for home soon like lightningWe soon will be riding, my shiny Black BessNo fat rich man's pony can e'er overtake youAnd there's not a rider from the east to the westCould hold you a lightin this dark mist and midnightWhen the potbellied thieveschase their unwelcome guestI don't know, good horse,as we trot in this dark hereif robbing the rich is for worse or for bestThey take it by stealing and lying and gamblingAnd I take it my way, my shiny Black BessI treat horses good and I'm friendly to strangersI ride and your running makes my guns talk the bestAnd the rangers and deputiesare hired by the rich manTo catch me and hang me, my shining Black BessYes, they'll catch me napping one dayand they'll kill meAnd then I'll be gone but that won't be my endFor my guns and my saddle will always be filledBy unwelcome travellers and other brave menAnd they'll take the money and spread it out equalJust like the Bible and the prophets suggestBut the men that go riding to help these poor workersThe rich will cut down like an unwelcome guest

If Billy Bragg, gorgeous harmonies from Wilco and the lyrics of Woody Guthrie weren't enough. There's the tenderness of a story of a bushranger and his horse that literally bring me to tears. I love this song.

woody guthrie is a prophet! this and so many other songs stand out and still speak to us because his cause was fighting for the working folks. its an outlaw love song to his horse but speaks to the plight of the downtrodden. still one of my favorite songs/albums after all this time.

This song is used as the theme to a podcast called Unwelcome Guests. The founder is a political anarchist and this song just fits perfectly. For me the Outlaw Jose Wales always comes to mind. Very different but some of the themes are present in both.

Roger, the song is about an outlaw and his horse. Outlaws are heroes in this country because they took it to the banks and corporations that exist to screw the 98 percent. Read a book or something, dude.

Wow. His point is literally antithetical.

*"Unwelcome Guest"*I'm not impressed so far by the songs of Occupy Wall Street. Where's this movement's Woody Guthrie??
