THE UNFAITHFUL SERVANT

The Band

The Band (1970)

Unfaithful Servant, I hear you leavin' soon in the mornin'

What did you do to the lady, that she's gonna have to send you away?

Unfaithful servant, you don't have to say you're sorry,

If you done it just for the spite, or did ya do it just for the glory?

Like a stranger you turned your back,

Left your keys and gone to pack.

Bear in mind who's to blame, and all the shame;

She really cared, the time she spared and the home you shared.

Unfaithful servant, I can hear the whistle blowin,

Yes, that train is a-comin' and soon you'll be goin'.

Let us not bow our heads for we won't be complainin';

Life has been good to us all

even when that sky is rainin'.

To take it like a grain of salt

is all I can do. It's no one's fault,

Makes no diff'rence if we fade away.

It's just as it was, it's much to cold for me to stay.

Goodbye to that country home,

So long to a lady I have known,

Farewell to my other side,

I'd best just take it in stride.

Unfaithful Servant, you'll learn to find your place;

I can see it in your smile,

And, yes, I can see it in your face.

The mem'ries will linger on,

But the good old days, they're all gone,

Oh! Lonesome servant, can't you see,

That we're still one and the same, just you and me.

I heard Robbie used a different tuning for this song. It sounds just fine in e tuning, anyone know anything about this?

RIP Rick Danko. Today is the 15th anniversary of his passing and I can't stop listening and adoring his work.

Is Robbie using a double-neck guitar? It sounds like he uses a capo for most of the song but the solo is definitely un-capo'd and it also doesn't seem overdubbed. There's also a significant break between the solo and the outro on the guitar.

Rick Danko had a voice that was perfect with the Band, but it's one of those things, like many other bands that have had unforgettable chemistry...he never seemed to be quite as impressive apart from the Band, in my opinion. That sense of marvelous combinations of talent fated for greatness in only one form...that's the Band.We could all use a bit of them now, when everywhere there is less warmth, less humanity, less humor, it seems...they mean so much. Nobody comes close to the Band.

The only thing that every let us down about The Band is that they left the dance too early for those of us that love their music.

Whe he sings 'I can hear the whistle blowing ' and the horns come in...hairs on the back of the neck stand up..

It's Robbie on acoustic guitar. Listen carefully.

That's a nice take on it.

I've always found this song ethereal. Like some strange piece of paper that flies on the wind by the moon. Something odd. Probably the fact that Rick Danko is dead has a lot to do with it. One of the best songs on the album, though.

The Band was completely unique and there will never be another like it -- but I agree, the musical level has really plummeted hasn't it?

Two words in reply to genius Chet Atkins The Band was a sum greater than its parts... Atkins was deity the likes of Hendrix, Clapton, or even Zappa and Fripp can pay homage too.

Wow. That's odd. Pretty cool, though. I've never heard a guitar sound like that... they were genius.

Lol. Actually it is a guitar. I didn't really know until I read this article on The Band's website. Pretty confusing... But I just listened to this a little more closely and realized there wasn't the harmonic double tone(since it has sets of two of each string) thing you hear on mandolins(i play one myself). And again with the string bendy thing. Sorry.

Our conservative little world is in some pretty deep shit at the moment... but sooner or later we shall all be released... Hopefully another apocalypse theory comes along and wipes us all out before another political disaster, genocide, or hit pop band pops up and makes our lives even worse.

Oh... I was listening to the "Rock of Ages" rendition while I commented on this one... my mistake. I guess that's why its so hard to play it on the guitar without hitting any open strings on accident. Robbie plays the solo on live versions.
