The first tracker was Soundmonitor by Chris Huelsbeck for Commodore-64, published in October 1986 in German commercial magazine 64'er as a type-in listing.

Era incompreso all'inizio, quando fu rilasciato: non ebbe giudizi positivi che definirono questo applicativo "illogico e scomodo da usare" (periodo quando l'idea della musica da tracker non fu ancora concepita e si usarono ancora applicativi come Deluxe Music Construction Set per sfruttare le capacità del chipset Paula, o delle interfacce MIDI esterne). Inoltre, all'inizio non era il massimo della comodità: il fatto che non era in grado di eseguire lo scrolling verticale durante la riproduzione dell'intero brano, i file che non potevano essere salvati come contenitori unici (ogni volta che si caricava un brano occorreva un secondo floppy disk, i noti ST-xx, dal quale caricare i campioni: infatti, quando si salvavano i brani, si salvavano solo i pattern e gli orders, non i sample) ed il fatto che i sample caricabili furono massimo 15, oltre a quello che le prime versioni ebbero bug notevoli, reserò questo tracker decisamente ingegnoso da usare.Tuttavia, quando Obi rilascio dopo qualche anno il sorgente del tracker, alcuni programmatori risolsero i bug e si crearono numerosi cloni che aggiunserò un importante funzioni: le composizioni potevano essere salvate sottoforma di file contenitori (i famosi MOD). Da quel momento, la musica da tracker ebbe una rivalsa e segnò lo standard "de facto" tutt'oggi seguita anche da ReNoise.

One of the best is ReNoise.....it's really the best in my mind... It can also load VST plugins - you can render a selection of notes....which is nice! So you can type in a quick 1 or 2 bar bass line....or a kick + snare part...and render that to a 24-bit audio clip....then drag+drop these clips into Cubase or whatever.... What I am more interested in is -> what synths were these 8-bit samples taken from?

Thios isn't the firts tracker ever, before that one, there were trackers on commmodore 64 and ZX Spectrum in the early 80's. But so fuckin' good tracker ! Thank for the up'

@geobruf123 Goat Tracker is for Commodore 64 SID music! Get Milky Tracker if you want to make some normal music with samples.

@geobruf123 Making a PC version would mean a complete rewrite, so the answer is no. But there are lots of tracker-style programs for MS-DOS, Windows and Linux.

I remember this tracker as an endless source of fun and creative music. And also of endless flaws and hanging mousepointer (especially when you did NOT save for a long time) ;)
