I used to gas up their limousine(s)at the Texaco Station, corner of Highland & Sunset; Hollywood '65. Greatest days to be young !

+WickedTornado you definitely sound like an expert. in fact, i dont think this song even existed before you heard it - lucky for everyone else you decided to tune in.

Chuck Portz was indeed on bass here, he stayed in 1966 but left later that year.

No possibility of this being April of 1965. The drummer in this video is Johnny Barbata, who joined in 1966. It is 1966 not '65.

I agree....this was far from "one of the most important hits of it's time" or whatever was written by another poster. I'm 59 and was aware of almost every single am radio "hit" that made the airwaves at the time. And this is the first time I've ever heard this...thank God. lol.

They were a great band, one of my favorite '60s groups. I like this song a lot.

...on a deadly serious note (pardon the pun), I often wonder how many young men who took their last breath in Vietnam had a song like this on their mind...along with images of that GTO, or their gf. No wonder so many of those garage classics were steeped in fatalism...

What was considered a flop at the time, has turned out to be one of the greatest garage/pop songs ever recorded. First of all, who wasn't influenced by the Beatles? But while most garage aped the Stones, this song manages to turn a Fab Four sensibility into a sharp-edged stomper. It could do without the Beatlesque "Yeeeahh", and could use a touch of fuzz, but this is one of the closest approximations of the zeitgeist that I've heard. You can almost feel yourself behind the wheel of a '66 GTO...

The Byrds and The Beau Brummels sent me here. For a young Ann-Margret Olson and Nancy Sinatra. This one and "Love Is a Beautiful Thing" by The Rascals did it for me way back then. Thanks to Little Steven (and The Underground Garage) and Youtube for keeping this sound alive.

This can't be '65. Barbata on drums and the song came out in '66. Is that Chuck Portz on bass?

I didn't realize John Barbata was already their drummer when this song came out. When exactly did he join the group?

Great song. I rate Al Nichol very highly and if you read this Al you are thought about and wished well.
