A Classic Beach Boys Sound-A-Like Song From A Couple Of Song Writers Based In New York At That Time (Vincent Poncia, Jr. and Peter Andreoli) Who Wrote Songs For Various Groups Produced By Phil Spector. Originally They Were From Rhode Island And Performed In The Group The Videls. While Song Writing, They Formed The "Trade Winds" And Released This Surf/Beach Classic About "The Only Surfer Boy Around"....In Snowy New York....That Reached #32 On The Billboard Hot 100 In 1965. It's Interesting That The Group Name Is Spelled "Trade Winds" On Their "45's", Yet The LP's And Promotional Pictures Have The Spelling As The "Tradewinds".

Stand by, I'll be back here when I'm not so caught up in memories of the day when this masterpiece was released and produced the same results as now; a little depression because times were changing from surf & hot rod times to Purple Haze and VietNam. I'll deal with it tomorrow.......Thanks from The "RockinProfessor"    Peace

I love this song, but obviously these guys never lived in NYC. There IS surfing here. Rockaway Beach in Queens has TWO surfing beaches. A short drive to Long Beach, Long Island brings more surfing waves. And let's not forget the surfing capital of the northeast! Montauk!!!!! You can't surf in the winter, but just wait till summer guys!

MIKECNW responding to your inquiry about the possible genesis of this song idea...It is possible that the Tradewinds were a New York Based group, really dug the Beach Boys, and decided to formulate this story based on the idea of dreaming about the west coast and the warm weather during the wintery snows in NYC..as far as the story line of the song, it is also possible, that a teenager had to move with his family to NYC, based on a family move....Just some ideas.

This tune was pretty much the last song about surfing (or rather, not surfing) to chart. None of the Beach Boys or Jan & Dean's singles from 1965 onward were specifically about surfing. Just summer in a more general sense.

Wonder what was the inspiration of this song? Can't understand why anyone would wanna move from a warm climate as CA to any place where it's cold and snowy in the winter inspite living in such places.
