This carol has never been one of my favourites, but it has now leapt up the ladder pretty far. I absolutely love this version. Very beautiful.

enjoy the song please! history is always written to the bias of one party or another, so don't take what's in history at face value. History is also subject to perceptions, manipulations, and interpretations, so...let's not bring it up here for trolling. Thanks :)

Jean de Brebeuf was one of the "North American Martyrs" -a French Catholic priest who devised these lyrics to teach the Catholic Faith to the Indian population in North America and Canada in the mid 1600s. His lyric sheet can be seen at the Auriesville Shrine in New York along with some of his relics. Brebeuf suffered an violent and torturous martyrdom at the hands of the Iroquois. Pax Domini Sit Semper Vobiscum!

Have you ever been to Sainte Marie amoung the Huron village up near Collingwood? Interesting place. I went there as a teenager on a school trip and again when I was older.

Wide numbers there, and actually the Jesuits were killed by the Iroquois for living in harmony with the Huron instead of killing them. The Iroquois weren't Christian at that time either.

Yes, St. Joseph is the principal patron of Canada, and St. Jean de Brebeuf is a secondary patron saint of Canada.

What a haunting, powerful, epic version of this song. I love all of your voices - each is so unique, pure and whole. My sister and I just recorded this for my YouTube channel, but I wish I had listened to this arrangement first - it likely would have affected how we chose to do our arrangement. Beautiful!

This song has a fascinating history. It was written in 1643 in the native Canadian Algonquin language by a Jesuit Priest named Jean de Brebeuf and the melody is an old French folk song. Jean de Brebeuf was captured and killed during a war between the Huron and Iroquois people. He has since become canonized and is a Patron Saint of Canada.

Hey guys, let's enjoy this song instead of talking about the religion! :D It's much more enjoyable than pretending to know everything!

@ongawesgone Excuse me, but it was actually the Jesuits that were being burnt at that time. Do a bit of research about the Canadian martyrs, you'll find that I'm right.

@ongawesgone The carol was written in 1643 so you have had lots of time to hear it.

@ongawesgone - Jesuits burnt many Ancients in fires? What are u talking about?

Living in the northern tier of the U.S., I've never heard this song before. Never thought I would like hearing deep drum and rattles in a Christmas song. I like it! Even though the Jesuits burnt many of the Ancients in fires for not accepting their religion, it does have a pleasant Jesuit undertone to it.

@vaman: That sounds like Victor. He has the most operatic voice of the four. Remi's is a fine, classic Italian tenor. (They both spent years in Italy, studying.) Clifton and Fraser have more modern Broadway singing styles. All four are terrific singers with different techniques that complement one another beautifully. We heard Victor live recently, singing O Sole Mio, and were stunned. His vocal power and control are world class.
