Samuel Thomas von Sömmering constructed his electrochemical telegraph in 1809.In 1854, Charles Bourseul sugggested talking through the telegraph. He was a pioneer in development of the "make and break" telephone about 20 years before Bell made a practical telephone.Antonio Santi Giuseppe Meucci was an Italian inventor who immigrated to USA. He was rather rich when he came, but used up most money helping italian immigrants etc. His wife was ill and could not move so well so he invented an electromagnetic telephone 1849 that made possible for him to talk to his wife, a line between his office and the bedroom. Several sources credit this as the first telephone.He submitted a patent caveat for his telephonic device to the U.S. Patent Office in 1871, but there was no mention of electromagnetic transmission of vocal sound in his caveat. He did not get any patent because he could not pay the fee for the patent.In 1876, Alexander Graham Bell was granted a patent for the electromagnetic transmission of vocal sound by undulatory electric current.So Bell was not alone.I do not think Sweet knew this - or would care for that matter.It is just a song...
