There was this trend called sprechgesang (eventhought it comes from the 40s), combined with this male kind of voice on the 80s. You might as well say that David Byrne was an influence.

@julieswahn maybe you'll check back here. just go to google and type in sugarcubes snl and you'll go to an icelandic (i assume) sight that has the SNL Birthday performance. Best performance of that song if you ask me. Hopefully you find this not or you've found it already.
